Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to be released this Friday in the U.S., and is expected to make some massive box office numbers by the end of its run. I was lucky enough to have seen the movie already and had the chance to share my thoughts on the movie with you fans earlier in the week.

I was therefore very interested to see comments Dave Bautista made during an Interview with CBR. Bautista was referencing his thoughts on his own character Drax when initially reading the script.

Bautista said:

“I was excited about the script, but when I first read the script, I wasn’t crazy about my part. It went a different direction than what I thought they were going to go with Drax. That’s just because I was expecting one thing and got another. So I was a little bit thrown off at first. Also, what I usually do when I get a script is I read my dialogue first; I just didn’t really get the jokes. I just didn’t think Drax was that significant in the film, and I don’t find myself funny at all. So I remember reading, and I’m just sitting there not laughing. Like, wow, it was disappointing because I thought Drax was going to be so much more.”

Though he then added some context:

“When we sat down for the table read, is when it clicked. It clicked in my head. For one, I could hear everybody doing their own parts, and it was just so funny and deep, and some of it sad. But also, when I would say my lines and people would laugh, it would kind of start to make sense.”

That wasn’t all Bautista had to say. He also delved into the process of how they chose Pom Klementieff to take on the role of Mantis.

“We knew right away on the screen test, because I screen tested with three or four other actresses, and Pom was the one who I just connected with emotionally. Like me, she just wears her heart on her sleeve, and she’s just got that emotional range. She also has a knack of being able to deliver a joke in a deadpan manner. She’s got the same knack. It just meshed well together.”

What’s interesting to me is that Bautista’s initial thoughts on the script matched my own. I agree with his initial reaction after seeing the final product, and while he’s correct that context is everything and that Drax certainly has some funny lines and moments, I do not feel that this film progresses the character’s arc along in the way I hoped. Drax for me was so funny in Guardians of the Galaxy because it was dead pan and natural, the comedy is how he reacted to others lines. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 I feel like he is there primarily for comic relief alone. There is very little emotional development with Drax or Mantis, and they both have very minor roles in terms of the action sequences also. Ultimately my favourite character from the first movie was one of my least favourite characters from the sequel. From my perspective, this seems like an issue that was present from the initial script, rather than due to any performances.
