UPDATED: Patty Jenkins took to twitter to clarify that it wasn’t a confirmation, but hopeful discussion.
Hey All. Thanks for the excitement but that wasn’t a confirmation. Just talking about ideas and hopes. But still excited and hopeful 😉 #WW2 https://t.co/oaFZcPrRWl

ORIGINAL STORY:
Earlier this month, we saw the release of Wonder Woman. The film made a huge splash. Not only was a great movie, but it was the first standalone female superhero film in the current generation of superhero movies. It also managed to help flip the narrative for the DCEU, which up to this point was a bit split in terms of fan and critical reception.
Surprisingly enough, it sounded like Warner Bros. was a bit unprepared for the film’s mammoth success, as they didn’t lock down Patty Jenkins for Wonder Woman 2. To be fair, there was no way of knowing how big the movie would be, and in only locking her down for one film, they helped reduce the risk of attaching themselves to a director who turned out a dud film.
But now that Wonder Woman is a bona fide success, would Patty Jenkins be on board with a second film? While at a Q&A at Women in Film, Jenkins said (via Advocate):
“I had an epiphany about Wonder Woman 2. I was like, you don’t have to do this. It doesn’t have to be a foregone conclusion that you do Wonder Woman 2. But then as I was falling asleep I had an epiphany. I was like, ‘Wait a minute. You have the greatest character of all time that you love dearly, with a cast that you love sitting at the palm of your hand at this day and age — you can do whatever you want with them — are you crazy?’ And then I suddenly realized, it’s not more, it’s another movie. It’s its own movie. And it’s got to be great.”
From there, Jenkins delved into basic details about the flick.
“It’s a continuation of the same character, but there’s a great, entirely different story to be told. With this character in our—” She said, before correcting herself, “in the world, that’s fun, because now she exists, just funny, and also says something profound about the world we’re in right now.”
We’re definitely excited to see what tricks Jenkins has up her sleeves for Wonder Woman 2, but we’re also wondering when that will be. As of right now, the DCEU after Aquaman in 2018 is one big empty space. Sure, they’ve announced films, but we really don’t know which ones are still happening, or where they fall in the grand scheme of things. This includes Wonder Woman 2.
Regardless, it’s nice to know the helmer is pretty much confirming her involvement as director. It’s likely as close of a confirmation we’ll get until Justice League hits theaters.
