As much drama as there’s been surrounding the casting of Daniel Craig as James Bond, there’s been a whole lot more surrounding the mystery of whether or not we’ll be seeing Ben Affleck as Batman after Justice League.
Back before the release of Batman v Superman, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Affleck’s name was on the rise as a killer director and actor, and based on what we saw, he seemed like a fittingly intimidating Batman. When the film came out, fans still appreciated his take on the character, but Affleck himself seemed to pull back from his involvement of the universe as the film, and the DCEU as a whole, was subjected to increasing critical backlash. After clawing his way to the top with films like The Town and Argo, he didn’t seem too enthusiastic to return back to that part of his career.

While he was attached to both star and direct in The Batman, whenever it was brought up, he would distance himself from it, and earlier this year, he dropped out as director. While at San Diego Comic-Con, he all but confirmed that he’d return in The Batman, fans still aren’t so sure.
Casey Affleck isn’t helping much. While in an interview with WEEIVideo, he was asked if he thinks his brother Ben would return:
“I thought he was an okay Batman. Nah, he was great. He’s a hero, so he had something to channel and work with there, but he’s not going to do that movie, I don’t think. Is that breaking news? I just kind of made that up.”
Now, of course, it’s difficult to tell how to take this. Based on the video (around six minutes in), he rolled through this whole statement with very few tells as to whether or not he was serious. Was he backpedaling after he found out it was breaking news or was he just trolling? I think one could debate one way or another.
We’ve reached the point in this conversation where nothing would surprise fans. If tomorrow it was announced that he wasn’t joining, we’d be disappointed, yet not all that surprised, and if they announced that he’d be returning for sure, then we’d be happy, and again, not all that surprised.
The real question — at least for us — is whether or not Ben Affleck will be involved after The Batman. For that, we’ll have to wait and see.
