Earlier today, we shared a report that 20th Century Fox was shuffling around the release dates of their upcoming Marvel films. Deadpool 2 got pushed up a couple weeks and Gambit got delayed a few months. But the biggest red flag was The New Mutants‘ own date change.

The New Mutants — a horror film for which we’d already seen a trailer — was delayed a crazy 10 months. Rather than get an April release this year, it was delayed until February of 2019. So why the change?

According to a new report from TheWrap, the reason for this shift is because the current cut of the film “isn’t scary enough.” This is pretty interesting. Admittedly, when I first heard it was delayed, I’d wondered if Fox was getting cold feet, and wanted to go back in and make the film more mainstream, but it sounds like they’re doing just the opposite here, if this report is to be believed.

The Tracking Board, in a piece of their own, stated that while The New Mutants tested well with audiences, it wasn’t great. Given this drastically different approach to a superhero story, perhaps “well” wasn’t good enough for Fox, which is admirable.

While we’re all for making a better film, I certainly hope this doesn’t make the movie a Frankensteined project. We’ve seen what studio meddling could do, and hopefully, all these changes made are made in line with the vision of director Josh Boone, and are in service of a better, more cohesive story (though I fully acknowledge that no one makes decisions going into it thinking, “Man, I can’t wait to make the story s**tier”).
