Leonardo DiCaprio Officially Joins Tarantino’s Manson Movie

You knew it was coming, but allow me to confirm it for everyone: Leonardo DiCaprio will be starring in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Charles Manson-themed film, alongside Margot Robbie (maybe). This is DiCaprio and Tarantino’s first collaboration since Django Unchained way back in 2012 — has it been that long?

The Manson film (it’s working title is: 1969) has been a hot, hot property ever since Tarantino bolted from the Weinstein Company last year. Sony won the bidding sweepstakes and appears to be throwing all of its considerable weight behind the project, as evidenced by its casting rumors. Robbie is slated to play actress Sharon Tate, who was murdered in Manson’s Helter Skelter murder spree in the summer of ’69, according to Deadline. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are supposedly circling, too.

Tarantino will allegedly use both San Francisco’s Summer of Love and L.A.’s Manson crimes as backdrops for a gritty, movie-industry storyline about struggling actors in Hollywood. DiCaprio will be playing an aging actor, in what Deadline describes as a “Pulp Fiction-esque” homage. This will be DiCaprio’s first screen work since he won an Academy Award for The Revenant.

Interestingly, the film’s release date parallels the 50th anniversary of Tate’s murder by the Manson family. Is it weird that a skeevy capital crime is fodder for a glitzy movie debut? I guess it’s just me. Hollywood!

1969 hits theaters on August 9, 2019.
