There’s nothing incredibly traditional about the upcoming Detective Pikachu movie. In addition to being a weird way for the film producers to explore the world of Pokémon, it started off its casting with the surprising choice of Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu himself.
The strange casting choices continue. On Friday, it was revealed that actor Ken Watanabe would be joining Reynolds in the video game adaptation. While the actual details surrounding his character are minimal, his name is Detective Yoshida. Perhaps he can be some sort of competing detective? It’s hard to say since the character is an original one for the film.

Watanabe will also be joining Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom actor Justice Smith and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton.
Detective Pikachu is written by Nicole Perlman, Alex Hirsch, Eric Pearson, and Tom McCarthy. It’s based on the video game of the same name from Japan (and it’s a game that’s set to hit the U.S. soon). If you only have a passing familiarity with Pokémon, you’d be forgiven for assuming this Pikachu is the same one from the anime series, but it’s not. This Pikachu is one of many of the species, and unlike most, this Pikachu is a hard-boiled detective who has the ability to speak.
