Looks like we may be approaching the era of the video game mascot movie. Nintendo has recently finalized a deal with Illumination Entertainment to bring audiences a Super Mario Bros. movie, and for quite some time, Paramount has been working on bringing Sega’s own blue blur to the big screen in a Sonic the Hedgehog film.
Now, according to a new report from THR, it looks like that Sonic film has a street date of November 15, 2019. That means in just under two years, Sonic will be racing into theaters.
The film is set to be directed by first-time feature helmer Jeff Fowler (though one of his shorts was nominated for an Oscar back in 2005), which a script from Pat Casey and Josh Miller, creators of Fox Animation’s Golan The Insatiable. Producing on the project is Fast & Furious producer Neal H. Moritz, and executive producing is Deadpool‘s Tim Miller.
The bad news here is that if you were one of those people who thought that Sonic interacting with regular humans was weird, this movie is likely not to do a lot for you, as it’s set to be a mix of live-action and CGI (not unlike the Alvin and the Chipmunks films…though hopefully much better). With both Sonic and Mario both coming to the big screen soon, all we’re missing is a Crash Bandicoot and Bubsy film…okay, maybe not so much that last one…
