5 Recent Remakes, Reboots, Or Sequels That Were Better Than They Had Any Right To Be

The Dark Knight

We can’t talk about amazing sequels without at least talking about The Dark Knight. It had a tough act to follow with Batman Begins, which successfully reimagined Batman in a more grounded world. How do you follow that? By introducing his arch nemesis, The Joker, of course.

And this wasn’t just any Joker — this was a tour de force performance from Heath Ledger. His portrayal of the Joker was truly terrifying, and was perhaps the best example one could give of a hero facing off against an opponent who truly challenges them. It’s a villain performance that’s been unrivaled since, and even after dozens of superhero movies, none have been able to capture any villain even remotely as enthralling as The Joker.

Creed

Rocky had six movies. Six. One of which came out around a decade ago. With Sly Stallone already aged out of boxing, it was about time to throw in the towel on this beloved series of films, right? That’s what we all wanted. However, director and co-writer Ryan Coogler had the perfect idea on how to inject this franchise with new life — have it focus on the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, and put Rocky in the coaching position as a supporting character.

With the new, more emotionally-driven story front-and-center, it was the perfect recipe for a film that got back to the franchise’s indie roots. Star Michael B. Jordan was a great fit for the lead, and Stallone reminded audiences why he was famous to begin with. Another big plus in the film’s favor was the infinitely talented cinematographer Maryse Alberti, whose origins as a more indie shooter contributed to the film’s raw and kinetic aesthetic, which again, gave it that indie flare that made it more reminiscent of the original than any other Rocky  since Rocky.
