Without a doubt, George A. Romero was a key figure in what zombie films became for the horror genre. In 1968 he made an independent horror film that started it all, Night of the Living Dead. The story follows seven people that are trapped in a farmhouse. They are under attack by an ever-growing group of what we now know as zombies. Now in 2021 Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is looking to revisit Romero’s horror classic in the new film titled, Night of the Animated Dead. It is an animated adaptation of the 1968 horror classic. It includes never-before-seen exclusive animated scenes that are not found in the original live-action film. Night of the Animated Dead will be available just in time for spooky season. It arrives digitally on September 21st, 2021. Then on Blu-ray Combo Pack & DVD on October 5th, 2021.
Here is a synopsis for Night of the Animated Dead
In Night of the Animated Dead, siblings Barbara and Johnny visit their father’s grave in a remote cemetery in Pennsylvania when they are suddenly set upon by zombies. Barbara flees and takes refuge in an abandoned farmhouse along with stranded motorist Ben and four local survivors found hiding in the cellar. Together, the group must fight to stay alive against the oncoming horde of zombies while also confronting their own fears and prejudices.

This animated thriller will feature the voice cast of Josh Duhamel, Dulé Hill, Katharine Isabelle, James Roday Rodriguez, Katee Sackhoff, Will Sasso, Jimmi Simpson, and Nancy Travis. Executive producers for the film are Richard Potter, Thomas DeFeo, and Jamie Elliott. Night of the Animated Dead is directed by Jason Axinn.
This could be a great gateway film to get folks into zombies. By using animation you can ease someone in a little easier than with a live-action feature. The benefit of this one, in particular, is that the film they are watching is an important part of horror film history. I am looking forward to revisiting this film again but now in animated form!
