For the American Civil Liberties Union, the fight for civil rights is ongoing and more pertinent today after the 2024 elections. Over the weekend, ACLU SoCal honored many individuals who made a difference in the struggle to fulfill the historic promise of “liberty and justice for all” in the pursuit of preserving civil liberties and civil rights.

This year, the honorees included actor Mark Ruffalo, actor Will Ferrell, writer Harper Steele, novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen, athlete Brittney Griner, and attorney Cherelle Griner.

The event’s presenters and attending guests included Zoe Zaldaña, Kerry Washington, Ke Huy Quan, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Shepard Fairey. Jason George emcees the event.

“While we work to defend our freedoms this election season, know that the ACLU—over a hundred years strong—will be ready whatever the outcome,” said Marcus Benigno, chief communications and marketing officer at the ACLU SoCal. “This year’s Bill of Rights Awards recipients reflect the persistence and zeal of our enduring mission. We are proud to celebrate them.”
