American Gods – Neil Gaiman Talks The Unusual Production Of Season 2

One of the more recent television shows to catapult itself to the top of my watch list is American Gods. Between the first season and production on the second season, the show went through a change in showrunners, with Michael Green and Bryan Fuller leaving the show and Jesse Alexander coming in for Season 2 (though Alexander eventually left as well).

Author of the book and executive producer on the show, Gaiman recently spoke at a Television Critics Association Panel and said as far as he can tell, the seasons aren’t much different, even with the change in personnel.

“I was on the show before Bryan and Michael came on as showrunners. I got to watch that being made, I got to watch them leave, and Jesse come on and take season two. From my perspective, the thing that has been made as season two feels like the same show that we had for season one.”

Gaiman continued:

“Part of that is because we have amazing actors, part of that is because a lot of the people didn’t change. Our second unit director who also directed several episodes, Chris Byrne, who was very much responsible for a lot of the look and feel of season one was still there, and it still looks and feels like American Gods. It’s definitely taken awhile to get season two out, but it takes a while to get good things made, and I think we’d all rather have it good than have it quicker, although we’d rather have it quicker too.”

Fans of the show, myself included hope the trouble production the second season endured is the least remembered thing about the series’ sophomore effort, and that the show continues to bring similar quality television to the screen. The series is based off of a Neil Gaiman novel airs on the Starz network. The second season of American Gods premieres March 10.
