Well, it turns out those rumors of Andy Serkis potentially directing Venom 2 were not much ado about nothing. In spite of Ruben Fleischer’s Venom making a sizable haul at the box office, it looks like he will not be moving on to helm the sequel to the anti-hero, Tom Hardy-starring movie, as THR reports.
According to the outlet, Serkis has officially closed a deal to direct in Fleischer’s place. Tom Hardy will be returning to play the role of Eddie Brock/Venom. This will serve as Serkis’ third outing as a director, the most recent of which, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, can be seen on Netflix.

With Serkis taking over the director’s chair, it’s yet another key role that’s been changed, as the first film’s script was a joint effort by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, and Killy Marcel, the latter of whom performed rewrite — and Venom 2 is only seeing Marcel return. It really goes to show that the studio willing to change things up.
I certainly hope this means they will up the quality and create something that’s a bit more in line with the comics, even if they still can’t use good ol’ Spidey in any real capacity. But we’ll see.
