In a recent interview promoting Captain America: Brave New World, Anthony Mackie opens up on Avengers: Doomsday rumors and Chris Evans. Mackie we know will be in Doomsday, however recent reports also have Chris Evans returning. The implication it seems to Mackie, would be him returning as Captain America. However, Evans recently denied he’s in Doomsday, because he’s retired. Though, retired as he is, he did just play a Johnny Storm variant in Deadpool & Wolverine. So I would not take his words as fact.
Speaking with Esquire, Mackie said,
“I didn’t know!” he told the site with a laugh. “I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?'”
“I learned that right there.”
Talking about the articles from trades claiming Evans would return, Mackie said,
“My manager showed me. He’s like, ‘Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.’ That’s all I know. I haven’t seen a script.”

Of course, I really do not think there’s any chance of Evans playing Captain America in Doomsday. That will be Mackie. However, there are rumors Evans may be playing an evil alt-variant of Steve Rogers, Captain Hydra, who is team up with Doctor Doom. Where I believe things could ‘change’ is when we get to Secret Wars. I really do with the 616 version of Steve Rogers will be in for that one, possibly alongside Hugh Jackman, Tobey Maguire and Benedict Cumberbatch.
I also do not doubt for one second Mackie hasn’t seen the script. Far as we know that is still being written, despite casting work beginning as the script is finalised.
