The craze fitness trends of the 80s featured Jazzercise, Jane Fonda, and Richard Simmons. No matter how you think of that period—it features some of the most trendy fashions in the exercise industry. Costume designer Ernesto Martinez pushed his creativity to the limits to recreate the 1980s for the comedy series Physical on Apple TV+.

The half-hour dramedy features its final ten episodes for the third season. It stars Rose Byrne, Rory Scovel, Dierdre Friel, and Paul Sparks. And Zooey Deschanel guest stars as Kelli.

Here is the official synopsis:

Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego, Physical is a half-hour dark comedy following Sheila Rubin (Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. She’s also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image…..that is, until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics. Season two found Byrne having successfully launched her first fitness video only to encounter some new and bigger obstacles on her path. She is torn between loyalty to her husband (Rory Scovel) and the values he represents, and a dangerous attraction to someone else. And since she’s no longer the only game in town, she finds herself having to outrun some fierce new competition on the road to building a full-fledged fitness empire.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with costume designer Ernesto Martinez on his designs and costume creations for the characters in fitness and business.

Ernesto Martinez studied at San Francisco State University and the well-known Fashion Institute of Technology. He began his career as an assistant costume designer in Barton Fink and Corrina Corrina films. He gained accolades for his work in films and television, including Veep, Star, and Dollface.
