Aquaman was quite the wild card in the DC Extended Universe. Here was a character who had never had his own standalone story on the big screen — and one that was coming off his introduction in Justice League, a film that flopped hard at the box office. And yet, in spite of everything against it, it’s doing incredibly well.
Over the New Year’s weekend, it broke $200 million in North America and now sits at $216.2 million. According to Deadline, the film will likely break $300 million domestically. Admittedly, this isn’t a huge deal, as every other DC film, save for Justice League, surpassed that milestone. However, as has been clear since the film’s release, it’s those numbers overseas that are making all the difference.

The movie has performed amazingly in China and other foreign markets and is expected to break $900 million worldwide, easily beating out Wonder Woman $821.8 million worldwide cume, and that was a film that was a cultural phenomenon when it hit back in 2017. Should Aquaman continue to play well with audiences, it could also break $1 billion — something the studio hasn’t done with a DC film since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises back in 2012.
Do you think that’s possible? Could the first DC Extended Universe movie to break $1 billion really be Aquaman? Let us know your thoughts down below!
