It’s very difficult to know whether or not a movie is going to be a hit one’s own country. Studios have been at this business for over a century, and they often still can’t get it right, with flops coming out yearly. Hell, even Disney, the king of the modern blockbuster, has had their fair share of flops in recent months, with movies like The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and Solo: A Star Wars Story.
And it’s even more difficult for studios to gauge what will work in foreign countries. Again, going back to Star Wars, that’s a franchise that has never really clicked well with Chinese audiences, so what flies in the U.S. won’t necessarily fly overseas. But if there’s one mondo franchise that’s done well in China, it’s The Avengers. And Avengers: Endgame has pretty much trounced all expectations.

According to CNN Business, the film has reached $603 million in China alone, making it the first foreign film to break $600 million and the third film ever to break that record. What’s more is that it is the country’s highest-grossing foreign film by a wide margin, with the second place honor belonging to the 2017 film The Fate of the Furious, which made $393 million.
When all said and done, it is projected to bring in $612 million, well below the other two films: Wolf Warrior 2 ($835 million) and The Wandering ($685 million).
