According to a new rumor, a Batman Beyond movie starring Michael Keaton was being planned. However, only IF The Flash had done well at the box office. Instead, The Flash has severely under-performed for a variety of reasons I try to detail in the related section below. Therefore, that Batman Beyond movie for Keaton now seems highly unlikely to be further developed.
The information comes from Kevin smith on his latest episode of the Fatman Beyond Podcast. Smith says he hoped The Flash had done better because he had heard about this plan to make Batman Beyond. Clearly Keaton would have played the older mentor figure to a new Batman, maybe even his son? However, as said, the movie needed to do as well as Michael Reeves The Batman, and well, it didn’t.
Here is an approximation of what Smith said below. However, you can also see for yourself on the video below, time stamp is around 47 minutes they start talking Batman Beyond.
“I was hoping that it did better than it did because Michael Uslan’s kid said that…if the movie did as well as The Batman — The Batman opened at $130 million — one of the next Batman movies they’re going to make is Batman Beyond with Michael Keaton. So I was like, ‘Oh, my God, now I hope this movie makes a lot of money.'”

For me, this is a shame. I think there would be more fans interested in a Batman Beyond movie set in the Keaton Universe than there was in The Flash. For a start, it would be marketed as an elseworlds movie, which means if it does well, it could become it’s own little franchise like The Batman. Secondly, I’ll bet most of the money that The Flash has made came from fans wanting to see Keaton back as Batman as opposed to seeing Ezra Miller as Barry Allen.
Therefore, to use The Flash as a measure for whether they should make Batman Beyond, is I think, a bad call. The Flash may have had Keaton promoted heavily, but it’s still a Flash movie and its still set in the SnyderVerse essentially.
Will It Ever Happen?
I will say that we don’t know when this was all planned? Was it before Safran and Gunn took over and decided to reboot into a new DCU? If so, then it’s possible that the movie would not have happened anyway. Equally, Gunn and Safran could decide it’s a great idea and push ahead anyway. That’s of course if someone pitches them a story worthy of being an elseworlds. I would however, be shocked if Gunn and Safran wanted a third Batman movie around the same time as The Batman 2 and The Brave and the Bold. Both of these films are in active development and could release within a year or two of each other. In other words, if Batman Beyond does happen, it shouldn’t be for a few more years. We may not be able to say if it will ever happen, but it absolutely still could.
I’d have gone to see a Batman Beyond movie with Keaton as the old man Bruce. Especially with the right director and writers. I love Batman, and I go watch Batman movies at theatres.
What do you think of the news a Batman Beyond movie starring Michael Keaton was being planned, IF The Flash had done well at the box office? Thoughts below as always. Would you go see Batman Beyond with Keaton if they made it?
