Ben Wheatley Talks Filming a Horror Film During Pandemic with In the Earth [Exclusive Interview]

As the film world shuts down from the COVID-19 pandemic, director and writer Ben Wheatley’s creative juices continuously flowed.

The director of Free Fire and High-Rise took it as an opportunity to quickly make a movie while everyone is holed up in their homes. In a matter of weeks, he wrote and directed a horror film In the Earth with a pandemic backdrop. Despite the conditions, the talented director proceeded with the movie with no problems.

The movie even quickly turnaround to make its premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

In the Earth stars Joel Fry, Ellora Torchia, Reece Shearsmith, and Hayley Squires.

Here’s the official synopsis:

As the world searches for a cure to a disastrous virus, a scientist and park scout venture deep in the forest for a routine equipment run. Through the night, their journey becomes a terrifying voyage through the heart of darkness, the forest coming to life around them.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with director and writer Ben Wheatley on his project filmed during the pandemic. Also, we talked about safety protocols, practical and CGI effects, and filming in the wilderness.

Ben Wheatley’s latest release was with the remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca starring Lily James, Armie Hammer, and Kristin Scott Thomas. In 2016, he directed a shoot’em up style action film Free Fire that starred Sharlto Copley, Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, and Cillian Murphy. Also, he directed the sci-fi drama High-Rise with Tom Hiddleston in 2015.

In the Earth is currently playing in theaters today.
