Black Adam Cinematographer Wants To Continue Reshaping What A Comic Book Movie Is

In case you’ve been in cryosleep for the past 11 years, we are well into the golden age of superhero movies. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese might not see the inherent value of these things, but as the years have gone by, we’ve seen Hollywood creatives reshape what kinds of stories these films can actually tell. Of course, we have classic feel-good movies like Superman, but it wasn’t until The Dark Knight in 2008 that we saw that gritty crime thrillers were also a possibility.

In the 11 years since the MCU launched, we’ve seen hilarious space adventures, conspiracy thrillers, and even something of a dark modern western like Logan. However, perhaps the biggest game-changer here is Joker, a serious character study that raked in over $1 billion.

Lawrence Sher is the director of photography who realized that bold vision for the big screen, and up next, he has Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson in the title role. The man doesn’t seem content to rest on his laurels though, as he revealed during a Q&A screening.

“One of my interests about it is to continue to sort of—and we’ve talked about it with Dwayne and obviously with Jaume and DC—can we continue to sort of reshape what a comic book movie is? Like yes of course you want it to be entertaining and it has to make a decent amount of money so it can’t live in such a fringe place that it doesn’t bring people in, but can we do something inventive? So that’s the goal is to continue to try to do something a bit inventive with it.”

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that Sher’s work on Joker really did push things. From its lighting to its texture and framing, it never felt like we were dealing with a standard “get the job done” kind of shot. If he can bring that same deal to Black Adam, I think it will show that level of craftsmanship can indeed make it to the bigger-scope films.
