Black Cat And Silver Sable Movie Being Written At Sony By Chris Yost

We are months away from Sony’s highly anticipated reboot of the Spider-Man franchise when Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7th, 2017. Last week we were all surprised to hear that another character from the Spiderverse, Venom was going to get his own film presumably to be released in October of 2018. Today we yet another development for two more characters from the Spiderverse that are going to get their own film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is  in development for another film that will feature the female characters Black Cat and Sable. The script is being worked on by Chris Yost, who is no stranger to comic book films as he has just finished working on the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok. Apparently this has been in the works for a while now, onlybeing known as a “secret female spin off project”. The film will be produced by Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal, who are now working to line up a director as well as a release date.

For those who need a little bit of background, Silver Sable is a character that was created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. She first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #265 in 1985. She runs a company called Silver Sable International that hunts down war criminals. Although at times she is allied with Spider-Man, sometimes her actions have caused conflicts with him and other heroes.

Black Cat or Felicia Hardy was created by the Marv Wolfman and Keith Pollard. She made her comic book debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #194 in 1979. She is the daughter of an infamous cat burglar who trained herself to follow her father’s path of crime. She has had a complicated romantic past with Spider-Man.

With a project like Venom, there is no doubt that there is a huge fan base looking forward to that film regardless of Sony’s recent track record. But making a film about to lesser known characters spinning off of a franchise that is rebooting for the third time really makes no sense to me. But it seems as if Sony really doesn’t have much else going on so, why not? It will be interesting to see if Sable and Black Cat will be introduced in any way in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming film.

What are your thoughts, is this a good idea? Or should the focus their attention on other characters?
