Bob Odenkirk, who portrays Saul in both series, spoke at a SDCC Press Conference in which LRM was in attendance. Here’s what Odenkirk had to say about how Bryan Cranston helped him transition from a background mostly in comedy, to the more dramatic role on Breaking Bad:
“Bryan Cranston was the guy who really dialed me in to the tone of these shows. the first thing I did for the show was the commercial for Saul that Jesse watches, and it was very much like the stuff I did in comedy for my whole career. It was kind of broad and fun and silly, and then I had a scene with Bryan Cranston, and he was so amazing and serious and cold and dry. There was a lot of texture. So he really got me to focus. So working with people like Bryan and Rhea — who are better than you — really helps a lot.”

Bryan Cranston is certainly the man! Not only did he help shape Odenkirk’s portrayal of Saul, but he was also the heart of Breaking Bad, obviously. One hopes we see Walt return someday, somehow, on Better Call Saul.
