Boba Fett joins The Mandalorian in Season 2? Read on!
I’m a weirdo. I enjoyed The Mandalorian but wasn’t as infatuated as everyone else seemed to be. I respected how much it leaned into the Spaghetti Western feel, but its storytelling felt more simplistic than I’d hoped it would be. The characters felt a bit shallow to me, and after the novelty wore off, I wasn’t left with much to cling on to. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. But I was hoping for a bit more from it, given the talent behind it.
At the end of the day, it didn’t feel too much unlike a kid playing with action figure. We got Fauxba Fett, Fauxda, and a robot that looks an awful lot like IG-88. But still, I had to respect the writers on at least one level. They had every chance to have the titular Mandalorian be Boba Fett, and they didn’t follow through with it. That was nice and refreshing to me. It got me thinking that maybe they’d allow this story to exist in its own world, away from the original trilogy.
No such luck.
Boba Fett Returns
According to THR, Boba Fett is returning to the Star Wars universe in The Mandalorian Season 2. And the man playing him is the great Temuera Morrison, the same actor who played Jango Fett in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, not to mention the countless clones in Revenge of the Sith. As Star Wars faithful know, Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett, so Morrison playing him does make perfect sense.
This season will act as the first on-screen confirmation that Boba Fett actually survived his tumble into the Sarlacc pit on Tatooine. Admittedly, there’s a lot of potential in what this Boba Fett appearance could bring. For all we know, it can result in a fun rivalry between the two Mandalorians. It would be the first time the character would be developed in any way for movie fans and could ultimately fill in the gaps fans have had to fill in for themselves all these decades (barring the Legends novels).
Why This Is Not The Way
But, of course, that is also part of the problem. The strength of The Mandalorian, in spite of my complaints, is that it wasn’t filling in any gaps. It was forging its own path ahead into unseen territory. It was exploring formerly-unknown planets in the franchise. Yes, it had the influence of the fallen Empire, but there was still plenty of room to expand. I worry the appearance of Boba Fett will make the show all about him and not our own Mandalorian.
Additionally, I can guarantee that no matter how good this Boba Fett subplot goes, it will never amount to what we imagine. Fans have always done a great job of creating their own stories in their heads. That’s the great thing about implied story: it doesn’t need to be explicit. All you need to do is imply something here or there, and the audience defaults to what they imagine is the coolest thing ever. Committing the story to film (or digital) runs the risk of alienating fans invested in their own headcanon.

There is one silver lining. The Boba Fett appearance is reportedly set to be brief. Perhaps it’ll just be a cameo or bit role, or maybe just a way to close things off before hinting at more involvement in the third season. Additionally, because Boba Fett is a clone, it’s also possible Morrison will just be playing another clone. I suppose we will have to wait and see on that front.
Luckily, we don’t have too long to wait. The Mandalorian is set to air its second season starting this October. How do you feel about this Boba Fett news? Are you as skeptical about it as I am? Let us know your thoughts down below!
