Brendan Fraser And Rachel Weisz In Talks For Return To The Mummy Franchise

According to a new report, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks for a starring return to The Mummy franchise.

According to a new report, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks for a starring return to The Mummy franchise. Fraser and Weisz co-led The Mummy and its sequel, though Weisz character was recast for the third movie in the trilogy. Dwayne Johnson starred in spin-off movie The Scorpion King, which was not part of the main trilogy of films.

As per Deadline,

‘Universal Pictures is returning to one of its most beloved action-adventure franchises, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in discussions to return for a new Mummy movie, presumably reprising their roles from the studio’s Mummy films of the ’90s and 2000s, multiple sources tell Deadline.’

‘Reps for Universal Pictures declined to comment, and plot details for the new film are under wraps. But we hear Radio Silence‘s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct from a script by David Coggeshall (The Family Plan films, The Deliverance), with franchise veteran Sean Daniel to produce alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment.’

As for why? Here is what the trade thinks,

‘Turning back to The Mummy franchise makes perfect sense for Universal, given the real wave of millennial nostalgia for both all things Fraser and his Mummy films, in particular. This built-in fandom would be an asset at a time when the studio has fared poorly at the box office with its attempts at modern movie monster flicks including Abigail, directed by the duo from Radio Silence.’

I was not aware there was a lot of nostalgia for these movies, but I guess the timeline works out. Kids who saw The Mummy in 1999 are now in their late 20’s or early 30’s. Geez, I’m getting old.

As for someone who was there at the time? Well, I think The Mummy‘s success was partly die to it being a throwback and running against the blockbusters of it’s day. In 1999, I think of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and The Matrix. It was the kind of film you watched and said, not bad, but a poor man’s Indiana Jones.

However, It was a lot better than the latest Indiana Jones snoozefest, so why not? Would this lean more in to the horror elements of the original and the classic  Mummy oriented movies? I guess we will need to see, but the original was definitely more Indiana Jones than Hammer Horror.

I expect it to be bang average, so anything we get beyond that I will see as a plus.

What do you think of this news that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to return to The Mummy franchise after close to 25 years? Thoughts below.
