IT: Chapter 1 and 2 have already made over $1 billion worldwide, with the theater run for Chapter 2 still going. That’s a hell of a lot of money from a horror franchise, and you better believe that’s getting attention at Warner Bros. The question is, could there actually be a third IT movie made?
It does seem more and more likely with Bill Skarsgard who plays Pennywise saying that he and director Andy Muschietti have discussed possible paths for a Chapter 3. Here is what Skarsgard said during a press event for his new movie VILLAINS, courtesy of JoBlo.
“Andy and I have discussed ideas for what a third movie would look like. I don’t think it’s quite what people expect. It’s something different. The first two stories are the book, and the second film is the end of that story. So we would do something quite literally off book. There are a few ideas floating around. I feel like I’ve done what I can with the incarnation of Pennywise as we know of him, so I think it would be a cool idea to change up a few things. So, without going into too much detail, there is a story that we’re kind of excited about, but it’s way too early to say. But we’ll see, we’ll see.”
Hmm, I am well aware that this wouldn’t be the first time that someone has made a sequel to one of Stephen King’s books without there being an actual novel to work from, but how often do they work? The answer is, they usually don’t. You sometimes have to question if there is so much sequel potential in the story, why didn’t King write a sequel himself? The answer is normally because that particular story with those characters is well and truly ended, and that’s certainly the case of IT. The book (and I presume the movie) ends with the Loser Club defeating Pennywise and destroying him, so if there is an IT Chapter 3, then surely it’s got to be a prequel?

If we are talking a prequel, then they could literally pull any story from hundreds of years of Pennywise’s interactions with humanity. But would that really feel like a Chapter 3, a trilogy? Instead, could we see it branded as something like IT: The Beginning? It would probably generate some interest and some decent income for sure, but it’s a road I’m not sure needs to be walked down, how happy were fans with the Star Wars Prequels, or The Hobbit Prequels? That’s also with both of those stories being largely crafted by their creators, something we can definitely rule out with IT.
Either way, money talks, and it looks like you should expect to see more IT movies in the future, for better or worse. What do you think of this news, would you welcome a third IT movie or not? Leave your thoughts down below where they float, they all float down there.
