With Black Widow close to making its theatrical debut there is still some doubt if the film will succeed financially.  With the pandemic putting a halt to the film industry many have wondered if we will ever get back to the way things were.  In the past two months, studios have started to release films theatrically now that restrictions have been lifted.  The true test has been whether a film could last in theaters for an extended period of time to make it worth a theatrical release.  It seems the first film to withstand the normal theatrical time is Disney’s live-action Cruella.

As reported by TheDisInsider the Disney film starring Emma Stone held the number 6 position over the holiday weekend closing in on the $80 million mark domestically. Cruella is projected to surpass $200 million worldwide which was not expected prior to its release back on May 27th.  If Cruella can pass both of those numbers that will be considered a huge success considering everything that has gone on in the film industry.

While other films have been released during the past month, none have been able to keep a steady hold in the rankings.  Films like Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and In The Heights, all have tumbled down the box office rankings. Of course, a big reason for Cruella’s success is the positive reviews from critics and fans.  History shows that when a film has both the critic’s and fans’ support this gets the casual movie fan to go watch this film.

While it is still too early to say that the theatrical industry is back, positive signs like this show it is going in the right direction. Hopefully, this weekend’s release of Black Widow will give us another film holding a strong run at the box office.
