Daredevil: Born Again S2E07 Review – Courtroom Episode! (Kinda)

Here’s my review of Daredevil: Born Again S2E07 and finally this season we have a courtroom episode, well kinda. As always folks, this is a SPOILER Free review, so I’m not getting into plot details of this episode. The review however, assumes you have been following along so far.

Thus, we can come at this one from where Episode 6 left off. Daredevil walked away from Fisk, but during their confrontation Karen was arrested by ICE, sorry I mean the AVTF.

So, Karen is in the clink and Fisk is trying to get ahead of all the bad press that happened in episode 6, in a somewhat ruthless manner as you’d expect.

Courtroom Drama

Look, I love a bit of courtroom drama in Daredevil and it has been in short supply so far in Born Again Season 1 and 2. I’m not sure I can fully classify this episode as a proper courtroom drama, because it’s only a portion of the Episode and there are a lot of subplots happening at the same time.

It’s fun, and if you are a fan of Born Again, there’s plenty to enjoy here. One particular subplot, whilst not coming to an end, certainly comes to a head this week. The Daniel, BB and Buck subplot has been a real highlight of Season 2 and there’s no surprise things heat up given how Episode 6 ended. I think the highlight of Episode 7 is right here and it will generate the most talk among fans. No spoilers, just a pleased fan enjoying an appropriate turn of events.

I always feel like the BB plotline is given just enough screentime to breathe. Last week I was a little critical of the rest of the stories not being quite given the same room. Scenes feeling a little clipped and shortened to fit the prescribed runtime. I have to say I’m in the same place with Episode 7.

I’ll give one non-spoiler example. This Season we have not seen much of Matt Murdock. Due to events, Matt has pretty much been Daredevil day and night. Episode 7 see’s a return of Matt Murdock in front of people who would have wondered where he has been. Would it have hurt the flow for one little scene between Matt and some characters talking about where he has been? Instead, we are just right into the thick of and Matt is talking to the court.

Season 2, apart from 2 (maybe 3) outstanding episodes feels a little full, or too tightly condensed for me. We either needed a subplot dropped for this Season, or some of the episodes needed a few extra minutes runtime, which is the option I’d go with.

I will say that perhaps for the first time in Episode 7, I wanted a bit more of Heather. Her arc is being heavily signposted this year, but this week I felt like we got the first glimpse behind the veil. Heather had some good moments this week with both Karen and Fisk.

Oh and finally, I struggled a little with the action Fisk decides to take in the final moments of the episode. It felt a little too on the nose (even for this current criminal regime), but who knows? Maybe this arrogance will be what is used to end Fisk’s reign of terror? I’ll reserve judgement on that one for next week’s finale. One last little gripe is that Jessica Jones had a bit of a “my planet needs me” exit which could have been better handled in my opinion.

Overall, I have no serious complaints about Episode 7, and a lot of praise for the way some scenes were handled. I’m just saying, this series could be a level above where it sits now with allowing some moments more room to breathe and a few extra minutes of runtime.

Looking forward to next week’s Season finale.

GRADE: B+

Solid, fun, and if you are already a fan then you won’t be disappointed. I just see little moments that could elevate this series from a B/B+ average to an A average and I can’t help point them out. The + this week is for the Daniel/BB/Buck subplot.
