Daredevil: Born Again S2E06 Review – Jessica Jones Returns

Here’s my review of Daredevil: Born Again S2E06, and whilst I enjoyed it, I had a few critiques this week as well. This is a SPOILER Free review, despite the title. I think Disney has marketed Jessica’s return this week so much, I’m spoiling nothing to say she’s in it.

Perhaps though, it was not the best idea, or it needed more room to breathe? Most of my issues with Episode 6 come down to the pacing and scenes not having time to breathe. Let’s get to it.

Time is Always Against Us

A lot happens in Episode 6 and there is some really good moments/scenes here for fans. Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) was brilliant and all his scenes were my favourite by far this week. Fisk also barely, if at all, says a word until the final moments of the episode and it was the perfect choice. The Daniel and BB plot remains interesting. Again I count that as one of the better parts this week and I’ll say that subplot was given the perfect amount of time. The Dex, Matt and Karen scenes though felt too rushed and didn’t scratch that itch for me enough. I feel like more time needed to spent there and perhaps less elsewhere. I’m not sure that subplot fulfilled the premise of where last week ended, nor tracked well into where these characters end the episode.

Episode 6 felt to me like the directors were timing each scene and needed to move on within a limit. Perhaps they had to? My guess is the script was simply too ambitious for the runtime afforded. This episode could honestly have been much better by giving it an extra 20 minutes. In fact I’ll go one better than that below.

Oh and Heather’s story arc still isn’t working for me. It almost feels like this should be more subtle for now with a view to ramping this up in a future season instead. It’s a minor arc though, so it doesn’t drag on the show.

Jessica

Jessica’s scenes also were a victim of this pacing issue. It feels like a cameo, there to sell tickets (get bums on seats) or to promote the next Jessica Jones special or series. It didn’t have to be like that, story wise the return makes some sense, but it’s so fast and then she’s just gone again. I imagine she is back before the end of the series, However, I almost think Jessica could have had her own episode, like a one off that only connects to Matt at the very end. That would also have allowed more time to breath in the ‘other episode’ containing everything else this week.

Instead I feel like her dialogue was too exposition heavy. There’s simply no time to actually catch the audience up with what’s happening in Jessica’s world organically. Whilst I won’t get into specifics there are some key new pieces of information around Jessica and it was just a little muddled and rushed for me.

Overall, I still very much enjoyed Episode 6. It’s just that some parts worked better than others. I remain excited for what is to come in the final two episodes. I’m not sure how this storyline will end and I do enjoy that.

GRADE: B

Decent episode and in some ways flows straight on from two previously brilliant episodes. However, the script feels a little too ambitious for the runtime and Jessica’s story felt like tell not show. Honestly, splitting this episode in two with one focused on expanding the Jessica story and another dealing with the rest would have been perfect. Still a lot to like in Episode 6 though, especially from any scenes involving Fisk (D’Onofrio).
