DC Confirms A New Absolute Universe as Part of Their ALL IN Initiative Coming In October

We finally have official confirmation from DC Comics regarding the long-rumored Absolute line. Joshua Williamson and Scott Snyder made the announcement in a 10-minute video on YouTube talking about the long gestating project, which has apparently been in the works for four years. It all kicks off with something Darkseid “senses” during the current Absolute Power event.

This will ultimately lead Darkseid into conflict with a newly returned Justice League put together by Superman. These two iconic characters seem to be at the heart of both the creation of the new Absolute Universe and the tone of the All In initiative that DC is branding as a perfect jumping on point for all readers to the main DC Universe, the Absolute Universe or both.

Both veteran creators stressed that this is a line wide initiative and not an event. They also mentioned several times that this isn’t a reboot or a retcon. Rather it is a moment in time where creators can come together and tell their best stories with big idea in both universes where new story lines across all the titles will allow readers to catch on quickly to what is to come for the longest existing superhero universe.

The initiative kicks off with the DC All In Special in October with an All-In Special which will be a flip book showcasing Daniel Sampere’s art in the “Superman” side and Wes Craig handling the art duties on the “Darkseid” half. According to Snyder the Darkseid portion of the book will establish the ruler of Apokolips as the greatest villain in the DCU.

The clash between Darkseid and the Justice League is not without consequence “One thing it creates is a dangerous wild new planet where we’ve invited in the biggest names in comics and some rising stars to reinvent the characters,” Snyder elaborated. “All in one place.” This initial story will create a “driving force” for DC that should last for “years to come.”

Williamson added this is one big meta story, but what that means and how those two universes might cross over remains to be seen.

“If the main universe is set up by Superman energy, this universe is founded on Darkseid energy,” Snyder said. That makes the heroes underdogs. “They have to be tougher. Have to be more resourceful,” so expect this universe to be darker. Will that work for long time DC fans who are used to a more hopeful tone for these characters? I guess we will have to wait and see.

Williamson did mention that he is staying on the main Superman title, but will be joined by artist Dan Mora going forward. We also know that Snyder will be writing Absolute Batman with Nick Dragotta on art. There are other rumored creators on the Absolute Superman and Wonder Woman titles that we mention in our reaction video, but we will what until we have confirmation for those creators before we confirm them.
