I figure I’d combine a Deadpool & Wolverine review with my thoughts on what this does for the Marvel franchise. My two word review of the movie is a simple, nothing special. However, that does not mean I didn’t thoroughly enjoy the movie experience.
I watched D&W opening day last week when I was on holidays. I’ll preface this review by making one important point. That I’m not really much of a Deadpool fan, and never was. Comic books wise, Deadpool was never one of my faves, and the movies never changed that. I enjoyed both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 on first watch. However, both movies are what I classify as out and out comedies. Films in that category rarely if ever get a rewatch from me. I watch them, I have a few chuckles and then never think much of them again.
I am however a big fan of X-Men and especially Wolverine as a character. So I hoped Deadpool & Wolverine would be less of an outright comedy and more of a drama with comedy in it. Well, if you are like me, then do not expect this from D&W. It is very much a sequel to the two previous Deadpool movies.
Comedy Film
Ergo, many situations exist in this film for comedy value and should not be taken too seriously. If this was a drama, we could criticize the plot all day and pick holes in it. But, because it is a comedy, we are supposed to just lighten up and suspend disbelief. No worries, I can do that. However, don’t expect me to ever watch the film again, or care much about it as a result. Of course this is merely my taste in films, and you may think I’m bonkers for that. I just want you to know where I am coming from.
So, from my perspective Deadpool & Wolverine is a great sequel to the Deadpool movies, and the best of the three by far. However, also from my viewpoint, this isn’t much of a next step in the MCU, and kinda doesn’t matter to the greater plots of the MCU.

Where D&W excels over the first two Deadpool movies is having a new sandbox to play in. Better and cooler cameos and a clear access to the MCU as opposed to existing in the FoX-Verse. The jokes are funny, the cameos are cool and work well in the context of the movie, and some of the action is pretty well choreographed. However, it also feels a bit like the movie was a collection of cool fan service moments linked together with a very thin plot.
The movie itself really doesn’t play in the MCU though, we see it’s there, in the background. However, D&W deals with all the other Marvel movie universe that were not MCU. There’s an element of finality for some of those characters, whereas we know we will see Deadpool and Wolverine again. Character development wise, there’s not much to say. This variant of Wolverine does develop somewhat over the course of the movie. I’m not sure I could say the same of Wade Wilson though. But, this is a comedy, so I shouldn’t care about character development and coherent plots, right?
That being said, I’m okay with D&W being the movie it is. It’s a fun, turn your brain off, go to the theatre with friends or loved ones and have a few laughs. I had a fun afternoon seeing it with my 17 yo son and his pal. They both loved it more than me, but were also both bigger fans of the first two Deadpool movies.
Does It Save The MCU?
However, when I hear fans asking, is the MCU back on top? Does D&W save the MCU? Or, any other questions of that ilk, I am left thinking, ‘well, no.’ In terms of making money, and box office success, there’s no question. However, does D&W suddenly shift the bang average storytelling of the MCU post-Endgame in one fell swoop?? No, How could it possibly when it’s an out and out comedy with almost zero relevance to the wider MCU? How can we use D&W to assess where the TVA are post-Loki, when there is almost no logic applied to how it functions now. I mean they could have tried to explain, but Deadpool would just interrupt them by dancing, or farting, or something else that’ll make the kids giggle at the back of the theatre.
So, yes, I enjoyed D&W, more than I did the first two Deadpool movies. Yet, I’m more concerned with how Brave New World will measure up than this movie. I feel like the MCU would be the exact same whether D&W happened or not. It’s its own little movie in its own little pocket universe. Wolverine can come into a mainstream MCU movie and work, I’m still not sure Deadpool can.
So to grade the movie, as a pure comedy, I say it’s a decent enough film. Most people will go see this and have fun. I’d probably give it a B+, which for comedy is a good score from me. However, as a movie buff, more looking for drama and character development, as an entry in the MCU, then I give it.
GRADE: B-
It was nothing special, just a fun watch that I may only ever go back to when it’s on TV one day and I come across it and have forgotten most of the jokes. Anything deeper emotionally, just isn’t there for me.
