According to numerous sources, it seems that Den of Thieves 3 is actually happening. The movie is in active development at Lionsgate, with the company confirming that O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Gerard Butler are returning. News of the sequel came after the latest instalment, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was released. The movie did brilliantly, earning a total of $32 million at the box office. Although it is very early days yet, it has also been rumored that Lionsgate is talking with Christian Gudegast, who wrote and directed the first two movies, to see if they can get him on board to both write and direct.
An Elaborate Plan for an Impossible Heist
The first instalment takes the popular heist format that people know and love, and turns it into something spectacular. Heist movies have historically done well at the box office, with some examples including Oceans 11 and The Bank Job.
Even Netflix is investing in heist content, with their release of Good Girls. Audiences love watching heists unfold so much that it has even crossed over to other forms of entertainment, including games. Titles like Payday 2 give people the chance to embark on their own heists, including which bank to target, and how to approach the situation. You also have games like Bank Blast, one of the top 20 slots UK right now. In this game, players are invited deep inside a bank vault, with symbols including wads of cash, multipliers, and various other features that help to support several bonuses that can be triggered.
With heist storylines generally filled with tension, action, and suspense, it’s no surprise that Den of Thieves is making yet another comeback. Fans are already speculating as to what the storyline for the third movie could be as well. The first instalment sees a group of criminals hatch an elaborate plan as they try to pull off a seemingly impossible heist against the Federal Reserve Bank. The second movie sees the team become embroiled in the world of diamond thieves, as they track a criminal across Europe. With Butler and his co-star returning, it’s safe to say that Den of Thieves 3 could kick things into a higher gear.
Potential Storylines for Den of Thieves 3
Of course, one thing that the Den of Thieves franchise seems to do well with is exploring exotic locations. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the audience whisked away to somewhere bigger and bolder this time around. You also have the potential storyline of there being a rival crime syndicate, that threatens action heroes Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. by trying to beat them to the punch. This, combined with the thrill of the occasional police chase and the high-octane experience that the franchise is known for, would set the third movie up to be just as successful as the first and second. Without the writer and director though, the movie may feel like it’s taken too far away from the original pacing, meaning that his return could be integral to whether or not Den of Thieves 3 is a hit with fans.
