Well blow me down, filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film and the the first under Amazon MGM. Many newspapers, trades and other sites were quick to all parrot the news, but here is what Deadline had to say.
‘Denis Villeneuve is set to direct the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios, the studio announced Wednesday.’
‘Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce, as previously announced, with Tanya Lapointe exec producing.’
‘Villeneuve has been rumored as one of the high-profile directors being looked at for the project, alongside the likes of Edward Berger, Edgar Wright, Jonathan Nolan and Paul King. Earlier, the sense was that Alfonso Cuarón, a frequent collaborator of producer Heyman, might be taking the gig.’
The hiring of Villeneuve is a bit of a shock. For one, the director tied up with making the third in his critically and financially successful Dune trilogy. However, when thinking of directors who would be willing to work under the new leadership, I never considered Villeneuve. I think Villeneuve is great choice for any movie, if you let him to his thing. However, James Bond films have always been more studio affairs. In other words, not really suited to maverick artists who want to do it their own way.

If the filmmaker is allowed to make the film he wants, does this mean a new creative focused franchise under Amazon? One would assume Villeneuve would want a say in who the new Bond is and the style and tone would be set by him also. However, after that, whoever comes next kinda needs to follow that up using the same actor and this is when restrictions begin getting placed. I guess during a reboot is the best time for Villeneuve to have more of a say?
Next, who is playing Bond? After that, we’ll wait for the movie to hit theatres and see what Villeneuve pulled off.
What do you think as Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond film and the the first under Amazon MGM? Thoughts below.
