Later last night (for me) it was reported that director Daniel Destin Cretton exits Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However Cretton will still make Shang-Chi 2 and the Wonder Man Disney+ series. The information was first reported by Deadline, and here is what they had to say about the situation. I think the clear point to take from this report is that it says DDC stepped away voluntarily and is still heavily in bed with Marvel Studios.
‘Deadline hears that filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has decided to step away as director of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to focus on his other Marvel projects. This is an amicable exit, I understand, as Cretton remains fully in the Marvel Studios family. In fact, Cretton is in talks with Marvel Studios about directing future movies.’
One does wonder whether this move could be related to the rumored changes in Marvel’s approach. Namely that we are hearing rumors the studio may move away from Kang himself. Those do remain just rumors for now and officially The Kang Dynasty remains set for May, 2026. As we understand it, writer Michael Waldron is currently working on both The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. There is still no director set for Secret Wars, so one wonders if Marvel will hire one director to make both films? It worked for Infinity War and Endgame.

So far DDC has plenty of kudos with Marvel fans as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was one of the better post-Endgame Marvel movies. Therefore it is a good thing in my opinion that DDC still gets to make the sequel. I do recall at one point there was also a Ten Rings Disney+ series that Cretton was producing. However, I’m not sure now whether that’s fallen by the wayside? One Disney+ series Cretton is working on is Wonder Man, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Now the question/focus for fans will be on who steps in? I’m just going to put this out there, have Marvel considered and spoken to The Russos? They nailed Infinity War and Endgame. Outside of that there were some rumors Marvel wanted Sam Raimi (Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man) to direct Secret Wars. Personally, I am not too keen on that one. I enjoyed MoM enough, but it wasn’t great. As for Raimi’s Spidey trilogy, the only one I liked a lot was Spider-Man 2, the other two movies didn’t quite tick my Spidey boxes as a fan.
I have no idea, no one (outside Marvel) does yet, or they’re not talking. So let’s fan pick a director. Who would you choose to direct one, or both of the next Avengers movies?
Leave us any other thoughts as Daniel Destin Cretton exits Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but will still make Shang-Chi 2 and the Wonder Man Disney+ series.
