Disney is bringing even more magic to the holiday season with the release of an all-new short film, The Boy & The Octopus, directed by Academy Award® winner Taika Waititi. Released today on YouTube, this heartwarming story captures the essence of Disney’s beloved tradition of holiday storytelling, weaving themes of friendship, childhood wonder, and the season’s spirit of exploration.
“For generations, Disney has been an ever-present part of the holiday season all over the world, and this short builds on the enduring connection that so many families have with Disney during this special time of year,” said Asad Ayaz, Chief Brand Officer at The Walt Disney Company. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with Taika Waititi on this timeless story of childhood friendship against the backdrop of this magical season.”
The Boy & The Octopus follows a young boy who encounters an octopus during a seaside vacation and returns home with his curious new friend still attached to his head. As the two navigate everyday life, the boy shows the octopus the wonders of childhood, playing with his Buzz Lightyear action figure, wielding a Jedi lightsaber, and envisioning Santa’s Christmas Eve journey across the world. Hidden beneath a Mickey Mouse beanie, the octopus accompanies the boy through festive moments, from playing games to watching Disney’s The Santa Clause (1994). Soon, the boy realizes the octopus’ desire to explore beyond their world, leading him to create a plan that will make his friend’s dream come true.

The short is filled with Disney-themed easter eggs from classic films like Moana (2016), Lilo & Stitch (2002), and Toy Story (1995). A melodic rendition of The Little Mermaid’s “Part of Your World,” recorded by a live 60-piece orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, underscores the octopus’ longing for exploration, adding a beautiful and emotional touch to this charming tale.
“The story manages to connect the feelings that you get around the holidays – the joy, the goodwill, everything – with those same emotions and sensibilities you get from Disney films,” said Waititi. “I think they go hand in hand and it’s the perfect match – and only Disney could have made something like this…with me.”
The Boy & The Octopus marks the latest creative collaboration between Waititi and Disney. Known for his acclaimed films Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and Jojo Rabbit (2019), and his work on the series Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows, Waititi’s whimsical storytelling style shines through in this latest project, produced with global creative partners adam&eveDDB, Untold Studios, and Hungry Man.
In addition to this new short film, Disney is celebrating the holidays with a variety of festive offerings. Families can experience holiday magic at Disney Parks, shop for themed products inspired by beloved Disney characters, stream holiday classics on Disney+ and Hulu, and support the Disney Ultimate Toy Drive, which aims to spread joy to children in need during this season of giving.
This holiday, Disney’s new short film will remind fans of all ages why the holidays are such a special time – and why Disney stories hold a unique place in the hearts of generations worldwide.
