Ahead of release this year, Ebon Moss-Bachrach talks playing Ben Grimm in Fantastic Four: First Steps in a recent interview. Moss-Bachrach will of course play Ben Grimm, AKA, The Thing going forward in the MCU. However, his first appearance along with the rest of Marvel’s first family happens in Fantastic Four: First Steps. It is expected by pretty much everyone that the Fantastic Four will also appear in the upcoming Avengers movies.

Ebon appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and whilst he was following his Marvel media training well, there were a few things he was allowed to mention.

First off Kimmel tried to enquire whether Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom appears in the film itself, or just as a post-credit. He asked the actor how he got on with RDJ on set?

“Uh, yeah, we lived together [Laughs]. He asked me to move in with him.”

“It’s not gonna happen. I’ve been through rigorous media training.”

Okay so he’s not going to talk about Doctor Doom, hardly a surprise.

Moss-Bachrach was willing to discuss the creative process of bringing Thing to the screen as a motion capture performance.

“I have seen a very crude rendering because it takes a while to build this stuff. They’ve got so many animators working on this. I wear a motion-capture suit [with] two cameras right here so they’re capturing absolutely everything. Every nuance, every expression, every thought in my eye. It takes a while to build it so they’re building it now.”

“Andy Serkis, who is the godfather of motion capture in a way, has this company called the Imaginarium which is at Pinewood Studios where we shot Fantastic Four and he was very generous. They have a room called the magic mirror where you put on the motion-capture suit and sensors and then they set up monitors and you can see, in real-time, a beta rendering…you can see the physics and how big the character is.”

Kimmel also asked the actor in a way whether we’d see him (Thing) smoking a  cigar? He said no, which given this is a Disney film, makes a lot of sense. Imagine Captain America and Agent Carter smoking 40 a day in First Avenger? Ha!

However, he was more positive when asked about Ben’s famous catchphrase, ‘it’s clobberin’ time’.

“I slipped it in there a couple of times,” Moss-Bachrach admitted. “We’ll see what happens. I don’t have final cut on this one, so we’ll see.”

Yeah, it’s gonna be there for sure. My one hope for this film is to finally get the live-action Ben Grimm I always wanted. I’ve always been a huge fan since I was a kid of Ben, and none of the movies so far have got him right for me.

So, what do you think as Ebon Moss-Bachrach talks playing Ben Grimm in Fantastic Four: First Steps? Thoughts below as always.
