Growing up, there seemed to be a stigma attached to comic book movies. Yeah, every now and then, you had a great veteran actor like Patrick Stewart attached to it, but it wasn’t until Christopher Nolan added prestige to the genre back in 2008 that actors really started to take it seriously — and I’m talking the big-name actors. You would never have expected someone like Robert Redford to star in one of these two decades ago.
At this point, it seems as though if you’re an actor, you’ll likely be headed to one of these things at some point in your career — maybe even across multiple franchises (see: Laurence Fishburne, Michael B. Jordan, David Harbour). However, there are some actors who don’t seem to like these films, and that apparently includes Dolemite is My Name star (and living legend) Eddie Murphy.
When asked by IndieWire if he could see himself pursuing superhero movies, he was very clear.
“No! I’m going to be 60 in a year. Who would I play? The old brotherman? I guess that’d be the character.”

When the interviewer pointed out that actors Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker starred in Black Panther, Murphy responded:
“Man, f**k that. I can’t be standing around in a movie with a stick and shit, pointing and telling people, ‘Oh, you should do this or that.’ I’m just not down with the whole superhero movie thing. But, if I had to, I guess I could play a villain or some s**t like that.”
It’s difficult to tell in this interview if Murphy is being serious or saying this all with a jokey tone, so I wouldn’t exactly say this is hard evidence of being against the idea of starring in a comic book movie. Regardless, while he doesn’t seem enthused by the idea, it does seem as though he’d do it if he “had” to, which isn’t the worst thing in the world.
But is he the type of actor who could actually disappear into a role? Could he even believably fit into a superhero universe? Let us know your thoughts down below!
