Elijah Wood Says He’s Read Script For The Hunt For Gollum Film

The Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood says he’s read the script for The Hunt For Gollum, further hinting he’s in it. I’ll get to my not generous thoughts on this movie farther down. However, here’s what Wood said at Mexico’s DesertCon this weekend, via CBR.

“Well, I can’t say anything about that. I know a great deal about it. I’ve read it. It’s really good. There are some wonderful people involved. The thing that is so exciting is that it is really getting the creative band back together. The brain trust behind Lord of the Rings, Fran, Peter, Philippa, they are heavily involved.”

“And then, the same production designers. It is going to be shot in New Zealand,” he went on. “So, it is going to carry with it such continuity with so many people who are a part of Lord of the Rings, and I am really excited about that. It feels like getting that old machine up and running again with all of the right people.”

I doubt he’d have read the script was he not in it. Frankly, the more I hear about this film and it’s AI de-aged cast the more I just see nostalgia infused cash grab. Can I blame WB for doing that? Not at all, they will make money off this, which is all they care about.

However, since The Lord of the Rings trilogy, every adaptation decision made for Tolkien’s works has been based not on the book source, but as an offshoot of those movies.

The Hobbit trilogy, made by the same team was remarkably bad and changed to connect better with the LOTR films. The Rings of Power I simply won’t give any more words to, but it desperately wants the audience to think it’s a prequel to the movies. The War of the Rohirrim animated movie was equally poor and essentially based on the popularity of Rohan in the films. What I’m saying is that the well is running dry and the dryer it gets the more desperate studios are and so we get less talented people taking the reigns.

This will continue until there’s nothing left to tell they have rights for. Then, they’ll remake the original trilogy again, probably with a less faithful eye.

I’m not the demographic for any of this new Tolkien content though. They aren’t aiming this at Tolkien fans, they’re aiming it the now grown up kids who only know this story from the Peter Jackson movies.

No thanks, I’ll stick to reading the books. If it’s not in there, I’ll make up my own headcanon. That’s all this movie will be, some other guys headcanon.

What do you think as Elijah Wood says he’s read the script for The Hunt of Gollum? Does this movie interest you? Am I just getting too old and need to retire from this business? Thoughts below.
