EXCLUSIVE: Avengers: Infinity War Writer Christopher Markus Wants To Bring Back Justin Hammer

EXCLUSIVE: The Marvel Cinematic Universe is large. Not just the cast of Avengers: Infinity War large, but also all the fascinating characters who we’ve seen come and go in the last ten years that didn’t make the cut for Marvel’s most ambitious film to date.

LRM had a chance to speak with Avengers: Infinity War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and Markus revealed the character he would like to bring back into the MCU:

“God knows what’s actually hatching, but you know … so research is, it’s a fascinating sort of cosmic counterpoint to thousand of comics. We kind of had to take that out and figure out how else to touch on those moments.”

“But, no, I wouldn’t say anybody who’s been like, who was in the MCU, got hit by a truck or anything like that. There are some people I love, who just didn’t like … I would love an excuse to bring back Justin Hammer, cause he’s just hysterical.”

Good call, Markus. Not only is Justin Hammer one of the only villains Marvel Studios let live, but he did swear his revenge, and rotting in a prison hidden in Trevor’s shadow in a Marvel One-Shot is not the way to treat Hammer. Or Sam Rockwell, the actor who portrays him, for that matter. It was the prefect meshing of actor and character, with Hammer just trying so hard to be charming, clever, and entertaining like Stark, only to fall flat on his face.

Without Robert Downey Jr,’s Tony Stark though, Hammer no longer makes sense. Ultimately, he was a better foil for Tony Stark than a villain.

I’m surprised Markus didn’t say Red Skull, as Markus and McFeely wrote all three Captain America movies prior to Infinity War, and we all know Red Skull wasn’t killed, just transported … somewhere.
