Exclusive Clip: Spencer Cohen’s Award-Winning Comedy ‘The Compatriots’

LRM Online is excited to share an exclusive clip from Spencer Cohen’s heartfelt and hilarious debut feature The Compatriots, which will be available on Apple/iTunes, Amazon, and all major digital platforms in the U.S. and Canada starting September 16, with an international rollout to follow.

The exclusive scene, titled “Skymall Baby!”, features Rafael Silva (Don’t Look Up) and Denis Shepherd (Paradise Lost), giving audiences a first look at the sharp comedic chemistry that drives the story.

The Compatriots follows Javi (Silva), an undocumented immigrant facing deportation, who unexpectedly reconnects with his estranged best friend Hunter (Shepherd), a charming but restless bachelor searching for more meaningful relationships. Together, the two embark on a touching and comedic journey to prevent Javi from being expelled from the only country he has ever called home.

Directed and written by Cohen, the film also stars Dakota Lustick (Dexter: New Blood, The Holdovers), Caroline Portu (Love, Weddings & Other Disasters), Jaison Hunter (Wu-Tang: An American Saga), and Brandon Grimes (PansyVision). Producers Jennifer Potts and Alberto Sayan helped bring the film to life, with Sayan’s personal story as a Dreamer from Peru serving as a key inspiration.

The release of The Compatriots coincides with Citizen Day in the U.S. on September 17, underscoring its themes of immigration, belonging, and identity. With humor and compassion, the film highlights the experiences of undocumented immigrants—particularly those who came to America as children and face deportation to countries they barely know.

Cohen’s personal touch and unique comedic voice have already earned the film critical recognition on the festival circuit. The Compatriots premiered at the Woods Hole Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature and earned Cohen the Emerging New England Filmmaker Award. It went on to win Best LGBTQ Feature at the Poppy Jasper Film Festival and Best Narrative Feature at the San Antonio Film Festival, while also being showcased at Maui, Ojai, Chelsea, and Fort Lauderdale film festivals.

With its blend of laughter, heart, and timely social commentary, The Compatriots is shaping up to be one of the year’s standout indie releases.

The Compatriots will be available on VOD beginning September 16 in the U.S. and Canada, followed by international expansion in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and more.
