Frozen 2 Scenes And Story Details Revealed

I was already a huge fan of the first Frozen movie (loved the songs and story), but the trailers for the upcoming sequel, Frozen 2, have caught my attention all the same. The tone has been decidedly darker than expected, and the scale of the story implied to be much grander than its predecessor. They may have already had my dollars thanks to the strengths of the first movie, but they now have more than a passing interest thanks to the strengths of the story presented. Had this not been a sequel, I’d have been on board all the same.

But while the trailers have done a great job giving us a feeling and implied scope, we still haven’t seen much in terms of scenes, as everything we’ve been shown so far has had music laid over it, making it feel more like a sizzle reel than an honest-to-goodness trailer. Luckily, at the Annecy Intl. Animation Festival, Disney showed off a few scenes from the film, and there are a few story details uncovered thanks to it.

The first scene confirms that, like the first movie, this will start with a flashback — with the girls as young’uns. Their father visits an enchanted forest, but something goes wrong and he’s brought back to Arendelle. The next line is interesting in its implications. “Since then, there has been a disconnect between the people of the town and the elements: Air, fire, water and earth.”

What the hell does that mean? Perhaps there is more magic in this world and the kingdom of Arendelle has forgotten about it? So maybe Elsa is sort of the last of her kind from a long forgotten world? The only confusing part is that this seems like a recent development, as this couldn’t have happened more than 20 years ago.

In another scene, we see Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Sven playing charades. In the middle of the game, Elsa is distracted by a voice only she can hear, and she leaves the room, and the scene ends. Head of animation Becky Bresee and head of effects animation Marlon West went on to say that Anna checks on Elsa, and the duo falls asleep watching the northern lights…but Elsa is awoken by a “mysterious voice.”

Variety then describes a scene we’ve already seen a chunk of, with Elsa crashing into the waves and running into a water horse spirit underwater. No extra details revealed.

On the whole, it seems like Disney is ready to dig into the mythology of this world, and for a studio that’s usually happy to pretty much say “Hey, you know magic? It exists, but we don’t need to explain it,” I find it very interesting they’re diving so deep into the logic behind it. as a fan of fantasy in general, I appreciate this kind of world building.
