UPDATE: Apparently, in my excitement to give this project a name, I may have jumped the gun. As noted by /Film, The Long Night is a title George R.R. Martin personally gave the project, but it may not be an official indication of what the project is ultimately called, as Martin stated in his blog last June.
“We’re very early in the process, of course, with the pilot order just in, so we don’t have a director yet, or a cast, or a location, or even a title. (My vote would be THE LONG NIGHT, which says it all, but I’d be surprised if that’s where we end up. More likely HBO will want to work the phrase “game of thrones” in there somewhere. We’ll know sooner or later).”
Now, that’s not to say the show can’t be called The Long Night, but it doesn’t look like an official deal just yet.
ORIGINAL STORY:
On Tuesday of this week, we reported on the news that the talented Naomi Watts would be joining the world of Westeros in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, which is set thousands of years before the events in the HBO series. Though when writing up that piece, I couldn’t help but be at least a little annoyed at the fact that I could only call it by the name, “the Game of Thrones prequel.”
Well, my ultimate first world problem seems to have come to an end, as Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has taken to his official “not a blog” blog to let us know what we can start calling it — well, sort of. It’s actually just a post celebrating Watts’ casting in the show, and he kind of just drops the title of the show as if it had already been revealed.

According to him, the show is called The Long Night, which sadly doesn’t really do much for us in terms of story revelations. Given the epic nature of Game of Thrones, it’s doubtful it takes place over the course of a night, but it could follow events leading up to the “long night” in question. That being said, given how little information we have, it’s a bit foolish of us to even try and speculate at this point.
Jane Goldman wrote the pilot for The Long Night and will also act as showrunner. Martin states that the show’s team is currently in London going through the casting process, so we’re likely to hear more news very soon. Given how big this franchise has become, it wouldn’t surprise me to hear more big names.
