Creator Gerorge R. R. Martin, commonly shortened to GRRM, confirms Game of Thrones sequel ‘Snow’ in development. The initial report came from THR without too many details. Only that a new sequel was being developed starring Kit Harrington as Jon Snow. Yesterday we covered another Thrones star Emilia Clarke confirming that Harrington had told her about this sequel already.
In his latest Not a Blog, GRRM holds his hands up, it is real. Though, I’ll let you read what he had to say for yourself. Martin praised THR for their reporting. Later in the post, also having a go at certain clickbait sites for misreporting the things he has said relating to The Rings of Power, which frankly aren’t even worth discussing.
Below I have edited the most relevant parts of Martin’s post together. To read the full prose from the man himself, feel free to check the source link above.
George R. R . Martin talks Snow
Yes, there is a Jon Snow show in development. The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER story was largely correct.
Our working title for the show is SNOW.
There are four live-action successor shows in development at HBO. Word got out about three of them some time ago. TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, the Nymeria show, helmed by Amanda Segel. SEA SNAKE, aka NINE VOYAGES, with Bruno Heller. And the Dunk & Egg show, THE HEDGE KNIGHT or KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS, with Steve Conrad writing.
SNOW has been in development almost as long as the other three, but for whatever reason it was never announced and it never leaked… until now.
It seems as though Emilia Clarke has already mentioned that SNOW was Kit’s idea in a recent interview. So that part is out. Yes, it was Kit Harrington who brought the idea to us. I cannot tell you the names of the writers/ showrunners, since that has not been cleared for release yet… but Kit brought them in too, his own team, and they are terrific.
Various rumors are floating around about my involvement, or lack of same. I am involved, just as I am with THE HEDGE KNIGHT and THE SEA SNAKE and TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, and all the animated shows. Kit’s team have visited me here in Santa Fe and worked with me and my own team of brilliant, talented writer/ consultants to hammer out the show.
All four of these successor shows are still in the script stage. Outlines and treatments have been written and approved, scripts have been written, notes have been given, second and third drafts have been written. So far, that’s all. This is the way television works. Please note: nothing has been green lit yet, and there is no guarantee when or if it will be… on any of these shows. The likelihood of all four series getting on the air… well, I’d love it, but that’s not the way it works, usually.

There was never any doubt this was real because it did come from THR, then with Clarke confirming it, it was a certainty. I guess Martin felt he had to at least acknowledge the show in some way.
It’s very interesting that the idea for this show came from Kit Harrington and his team he put together. Whatever the idea is, Martin must like it if it’s progressing. After Game of Thrones ended you got the feeling from Harrington that he was happy to be finished. However, I guess not? It also just really shows you that had it not been for Benioff and Weiss wanting out, Game of Thrones could have spread their story out across another two seasons like everyone else involved wanted to happen.
I own the Blu-ray boxset of Thrones. As much as the early seasons were my favorite TV show of all time, whenever I decide to watch the show again, I struggle to begin Season 7 knowing what is coming. I can make it to the end of Season 6. Maybe one day, I’ll learn to accept that rushed as hell ending and Jamie’s arc making no sense?
I’ll check out ‘Snow’ if it ever comes to series, but I won’t be able to forget how bad Season 8 was.
