Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is almost upon us. The first was an unexpected smash hit, and it is fair to say expectations for the sequel have risen due to the quality of the first movie. One of the huge bright spots in an already bright movie could be found in the characters and their relationships. Yes, each of the Guardians had a very unique relationship with one another, but another often-overlooked one came in the form of Peter and Yondu.
From what we know, Yondu picked up Peter Quill on the orders of his father, and as the years have gone by, has been something of a father figure to Peter, despite the constant threats. The end of the first film saw Yondu chuckling at the sight of a Troll doll where there should have been an Infinity Stone. Despite the fact that Peter had lied to him, there was clearly a real love there that clouded the blue man’s judgment. Expect to see that father-son relationship between to the two to continue into the next film.
In an interview with USA Today both Michael Rooker, who plays Yondu, and Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord/Peter Quill, were talking about the evolution of the relationship between these two characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
“In the first one, he was a guy chasing us and in this movie, it becomes a little more than that,†said Chris Pratt.
Michael Rooker continued, saying that “Yondu has made peace with this kid that he’s raised and we’re having a good time.†And what does he think of Ego, Peter’s biological father? “[He] doesn’t think much of Ego.†Do we sense some impending jealousy?
Anyway, this new dynamic certainly fits with what we know of the movie thus far and that Yondu seems to be working with the Guardians rather than against them in James Gunn sequel. I wonder if his distrust of Ego simply comes from his previous dealings with the living planet. After all, it was Yondu who Ego sent to collect his son from Earth all those years ago, which of course he failed to deliver. Or it could simply be a more straightforward feeling of protection for the boy he raised for many years, especially if their relationship has developed positively since the first movie as this indicates.
Either way it seems like Yondu will be joining the Guardians in the sequel. I am excited to see more of him and his crazy arrow. One thing we already know: The Ravagers certainly aren’t going to be happy with Yondu going soft.
What do you think of this news, are you happy to see Yondu join the Guardians team?
