The biggest story of 2018 in our little corner of geekdom was probably the sacking of James Gunn by Disney related to historical bad taste social media posts he made. Gunn was not without his supporters including the entire cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and a lot of Marvel fans.
Of course we know that a couple of weeks ago it was announced that James Gunn had been rehired and that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was back on the table. Just how and why Disney came by that change of decision is up for debate. Did it have anything to do with fans being happy Gunn was making The Suicide Squad for DC? Were Disney worried his talent would help another studio instead of Disney, or was this always orchestrated so that Disney appeared to be taking action, but always planned to bring Gunn back?

I don’t know the answer to those questions, but I know as a fan I am pleased to have Gunn back working on that third Guardians movie. Over the weekend ET posted an interview where they caught up with Guardians of the Galaxy actress Zoe Saldana who plays Gamora. Saldana expressed how pleased she was with the decision to rehire James Gunn.
“I’m proud of him. I’m happy that he’s coming back. I’m so proud of Disney, actually, that all the leaders right now behind that big corporation decided to lead by example, and spreading the word and the message of redemption is important.”
Thing is I am not so sure Disney did all this for altruistic reasons, they are a business after all. I do wonder whether the ever important bottom line played a part in this reversal. We also had the fact that many of the stars expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision and Dave Bautista even went as far as to suggest he may leave the role of Drax as a result. Then we had various directors immediately rule themselves out of the running for making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as no one wanted to touch a movie they felt should be made by Gunn.
Then for us fans, does it really matter? Gunn is back in charge of the Guardians franchise and who knows what else after that? Gunn will first of all still be writing and directing The Suicide Squad for DC and I am very interested to see what he can do with a different IP. DC may well rue the day Disney rehired James Gunn if he knocks it out the park.
What do you think of Saldana’s comments and are you happy that Gunn is back in charge of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Give us your thoughts in the usual spot below.
