Some new Harry Potter set photos show us John Lithgow’s Dumbledore and a meeting he has which is not in the books. The Harry Potter TV series is filming now for HBO and Season 1 will adapt the first book, The Philosophers Stone (Sorcerer’s Stone in US).
The set photos below from location shooting give us a good look at how Lithgow will look as Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore in the series.
I think he looks good, but I was never in any doubt he would. Check them out view Daily Mail‘s X account below.

This one dropped yesterday and there was some speculation about what Dumbledore was doing on a beach given there are no beach scenes in the first book. However, newer set photos show us why. The scene being filmed here, happened off-page in the book.

This is Dumbledore visiting his friend Nicolas Flamel, creator of the Philosopher’s Stone, and his wife. Probably when Dumbledor gets Flamel to agree to give him the stone for safe keeping. Of course, it’s this off-page event which sets in motion the main plot of the first book.

I’m not sure this is a moment that would have worked in the book. It remains to be seen whether it works in the series. The first book especially is almost entirely from Harry’s very narrow (at this time) viewpoint. However, this is likely to be treated as a more of an ensemble piece so I can imagine a few extra scenes being added that don’t focus on Harry. I guess the question then is, does that take some of the mystery of Dumbledore away?
I’ll need to judge it when we see it.
What do you think of John Lithgow as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series? What about having scenes not in the books added to the show? Thoughts below as always.
