Clare Dunne and Harriet Walter are in the new film Herself. Their characters complement each other at a time of lost hope.
The Synopsis
Single mother Sandra (Clare Dunne, “Nice Night For It”) escapes her abusive partner with her two young children, only to find herself trapped in temporary accommodation. After months of struggling, she draws inspiration from one of her daughter’s bedtime stories and hits upon the idea of self-building an affordable home. She finds an architect who provides her with plans and is offered land by Peggy (Harriet Walter, “Sense and Sensibility”), a woman she cleans for. Aido (Conleth Hill, “Game Of Thrones”), a building contractor, appears willing to help, too. But as her past rears its head in the form of Gary (Ian Lloyd Anderson, “Game Of Thrones”), her possessive ex, and as bureaucrats fight back against her independent spirit, will Sandra be able to rebuild her life from the ground up?
Clare Dunne is an Irish actress with an established theater career in the UK. One of her most successful roles was playing Prince Hal in Phyllida Lloyd’s (Mamma Mia!) acclaimed Henry IV production. A play that was brought to St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, NY. She has appeared in films like The Cherishing, Nice Night For It andThe Donmar Warehouse’s All-Female Shakespeare Trilogy. Recently she was seen playing Victoria in Spider-Man: Far from Home. Dunne is making her debut as a writer with Herself.

Harriet Walter is a British actress in theater, television and film. Walter has been seen in films like Sense and Sensibility, Babel, The Young Victoria and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens to name a few. She has been seen in recent popular television shows such as The Crown, Downton Abbey and the HBO series Succession. In 2002 she wrote her first book, Macbeth and continued with three more books: Other People’s Shoes, Facing It, and Brutus and Other Heroines: Playing Shakespeare’s Roles for Women.
I connected with Clare Dunne and Harriet Walter via Zoom last month to talk about Herself. Walter spoke about friendship support being an important message in this story. Dunne shared what inspired her to write this story.
