There are plenty of heroic stories from World War II of regular people resisting their foreign invaders and aggressors. However, there are very few stories about the Chinese resistance during World War II fending off the Japanese aggression that nearly decimated an entire country.
This Chinese film, Hidden Blade tells the story of the Chinese resistance establishing an espionage network against the foreign occupier.
As shown in the trailer, it’ll involve complex storytelling with mesmerizing cinematography.
Here is the full synopsis:
During World War II, at the height of China’s war of resistance against Japan, a group of courageous citizens develops a top-secret underground network right under the nose of the newly established puppet regime. At increasingly great peril to their own lives, the double agents masterfully extract classified information from deep behind enemy lines, an effort that gives rise to the united front that will help turn the tide of the conflict.
The cast includes Tony Leung (Shang-Chi, Hero), Wang YiBo (Born to Fly), Chengpeng Dong (I Am Not Madame Bovary), Zhou Xun (Flying Swords of Dragon Gate), Eric Wang (Three-Body), and Huang Lei (Phantom of the Theatre). Cheng Er (The Wasted Times) directed the movie.

World War II stories from the Eastern hemisphere are quite limited on the home front because it’s often overlooked or lacks interest in the importation of these films. Hidden Blade definitely looks promising as an espionage drama and hopefully, it finds an audience for these types of films.
Hidden Blade is in select theaters starting on February 17.
