Fellow LRM writer Cam Clark and I have always been huge cheerleaders of the fantasy series His Dark Materials. As fans of the source material, we couldn’t wait to see this thing get the adaptation it deserved — one that better captured the essence of the novels and was unafraid of some of the more uncomfortable themes and messages it addressed (including the author’s disdain for organized religion).
Back in 2007, The Golden Compass hit theaters, and kind of limped out of the box office, not making enough to justify another entry. Luckily, with this new series, we’re getting a much more faithful interpretation, and British audiences seem to be responding.

According to Deadline, the premiere of the eight-episode season was the highest-rated drama premiere since The Musketeers back in January of 2014. His Dark Materials was narrowly beaten out by The Musketeers’ 7.4M viewer premiere, clocking in a reported 7.2M viewers.
If you’re like me, you hope that this rating carries over to the U.S., allowing BBC to up the budget in its second season, adding in more daemons to the background characters, which was sorely lacking in the first episode.
