While BBC and HBO’s His Dark Materials has been a pretty solid success in the U.K., taking in a decent 7.2 million viewers for its premiere episode, “Lyra’s Jordan,” we’ve been waiting to see whether or not it would have anywhere near that good of a reception in North America.
TheWrap is reporting that the premiere episode enjoyed 424,000 viewers for its initial airing on HBO, and that successive views on HBO Go and HBO Now brought the total to 700,000 viewers.

This admittedly doesn’t sound like an awfully promising start, but this figure is enough to make it the most-viewed Monday debut since Chernobyl this past May, which had 1.2 million total viewers across the different platforms.
In all honesty, none of this sounds too promising to me, as that little piece of trivia above is incredibly specific in nature. We’ll have to see whether or not this number will increase by much, but I think the key here will be the reception in the episodes to follow. Will this be the kind of show that gains traction over time? I personally hope so, and if not, I hope it maintains its numbers in the U.K., justifying its existence through there.
