Paramount has revealed details of a new Indiana Jones 4k Boxset coming on June 8th. The set will mark the 40th Anniversary of Raiders of the Lost Ark. The very first, and in my opinion still the best, Indiana Jones adventure first hit theaters in 1981.
This will be the first time that all four Indiana Jones movies will be available physically in 4K.
“All four films are available together in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision and HDR-10 for ultra-vivid picture quality and state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos audio. Each film has been meticulously remastered from 4K scans of the original negatives with extensive visual effects work done to ensure the most pristine and highest quality image. All picture work was approved by director Steven Spielberg.”
I am interested to see the quality here. I currently have the Blu-ray boxset and whilst the picture is decent upscaled to 4K, I feel like some other movies from the same period have had a little more love. For example Spielberg’s Jaws was so stunning upscaled from Blu-ray to 4K that I felt I didn’t need to get the 4K version anytime soon.

What irks a little here is that we cannot get these Indiana Jones films on Disney+. There is one of two possibilities I see with this boxset’s timing. Maybe the Indiana Jones films are going onto Paramount+ in 4K, therefore they’re trying to sell some physical copies first? Another possibility would some kinda of deal with Disney to acquire the rights to the first four Indiana Jones movies?
I have to say that I think Indiana Jones coming to Disney+ seems unlikely. With Paramount+ coming, I have a hard time seeing Paramount wanting to let go of the rights to movies as big as the Indiana Jones films. Indiana Jones will be attractive to subscribers, despite the fact Paramount can do no more with the IP.
As for Disney, I’m sure they would love to have Indiana Jones on Disney, but it’s not their call. Indiana Jones 5 will obviously be a Disney film and will end up on Disney+ eventually. How much cash would it take though for Paramount to give those streaming rights to Disney? I’m betting it would not be cheap.
With the streaming rights up in the air, and the fact Paramount+ has no international release plans for now, it makes this box set attractive to me. I just feel like I want to wait six months. Probably this will coincide with a price drop and if there is some surprise Disney+ announcement it will allow me to stick with that option. Though, as said above, I cannot see that dream coming true for this Indy fan.
