James Gunn Confirms Nicholas Hoult As Lex Luthor In Superman: Legacy

A couple bits of DCU news today, we have the Batman: Caped Crusader trailer for you, plus Lex Luthor was spotted on set of Superman.

After initially not responding to the reports from trades, James Gunn finally confirms Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. It had been long rumored and then semi-confirmed by several trades. However, unlike all the other roles there was no word from Gunn. Now there is and Gunn explains the reason he could not confirm this news earlier was because it was not finalized, despite what was reported.

Gunn confirmed the news on Instagram, but here is what he had to say.

“Yes, finally I can answer, @nicholashoult is Lex Luthor in #SupermanLegacy and I couldn’t be happier. We went out to dinner last night to celebrate and discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. “But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?” Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain. Anyway, here’s to Lex (and Nicholas!), one of my very favorite characters in the DCU.”

So that’s that. A few minor roles left to be cast, but the main roles in Superman: Legacy are now all filled.

I have faith Gunn knows what it takes to make a good Lex Luthor. So far Gunn’s favorite live-action Lex has been Michael Rosenbaum in Smallville. I agree with him, so I feel confident this won’t be the usual horrible take on Lex. Oh, and if you’re wondering why Gunn didn’t just ask Rosenbaum, seen as they are friends? It’s pretty simple. Rosenbaum is now too old to play a contemporary of this David Corenswet’s Superman. Gunn confirmed as much on Threads.

“I love Michael – he was my favorite Lex and he’s one of my very close friends. But I wanted a Lex who was contemporaries with Superman.”

Hoult is a good actor, and very diverse in his roles. I’m sure with a bald cap on he can be a great version of Lex which leans into that more serious Rosenbaum take and away from the camp of the past.

So, James Gunn finally confirms Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy. If you have any comments on this piece of casting, leave them below as always.
